Over the past few years, we have witnessed the entire beauty market go through a massive boom. A constant influx of new brands, ingredients, formulas, and so forth is enough to make anyone’s head spin. I’ll be the first to admit that I sometimes fell victim to these health buzzwords, only to come up disappointed that I spent money on products that don’t necessarily have a lasting impact. I have tried almost every skincare product under the sun and there’s quite a lot that I vowed never to purchase again. On the other hand, I have my ride-or-die products that I simply cannot picture living without. These Holy Grail skincare products have a permanent collection in my bathroom and I can vouch for them wholeheartedly. If you have skincare purchasing fatigue, let me break it down for you so you have a better grasp on what to buy. Scroll ahead for my top rated skincare products and the most overrated ones.…

Overrated: Pore Strips
I swore off pore strips a long time ago, but this is your friendly reminder to do the same if you still routinely use them. While they can be incredibly satisfying to peel off, they don’t provide any long-term benefits to your skin. It’s important to note that you’re not actually making your pores smaller by clearing out your pores. In fact, it could actually enlarge them if you’re not careful!
Top Rated Skincare: Retinol & Mask Treatments
Instead of using pore strips, incorporate retinol into your nighttime skincare regimen. This anti-aging ingredient encourages cell turnover, which ultimately gives your skin a brighter, more radiant appearance. Plus, it not only reduces the appearance of pores but fine lines and texture as well. I swear by Augustinus Bader – it’s pricey but worth its weight in gold!
Masks are also one of my top rated skincare products. Unlike pore strips, masks don’t just skim the surface; they delve deep into the skin, extracting impurities, excess oils, and debris that lurk within pores. They work their magic, minimizing those pesky pores and refining the skin’s texture. Pore strips, on the other hand, might offer a quick fix, but they often miss the mark by only addressing what’s visible. Masks, with their active ingredients and nourishing properties, offer a more comprehensive approach, leaving the skin rejuvenated, fresh, and refined. My personal favorite is the Orveda Deep-Clearing Mud Mask Treatment.

Overrated: Alcohol-Based Toners
A splash of astringent toner to a cleansed face can feel incredibly refreshing, but be cautious about the type of toner you use. You might think that an alcohol-based toner does an incredible job of removing all excess grease and dirt, but this can inadvertently strip your skin of moisture.
Top Rated Skincare: Water-Based Toners
In place of the aforementioned, I highly suggest using water-based, alcohol-free toners. While they still remove traces of grime and dirt, these toners are a much gentler option, making it a great choice for those with sensitive skin. You’ll find that water-based formula will actually add moisture back into your face rather than taking it away.

Overrated: Drying Lotion
Without fail, a pimple or blemish always crops up overnight when you have an important event on the horizon. Next time this happens, consider twice before reaching for your drying lotion like the Mario Badescu one. While this product can dry your breakout, it’s also just as easy to further inflame the area. These drying products can easily trap the breakout under dry skin, ultimately preventing it from healing properly.
Top Rated Skincare: Pimple Patches
The best way to combat a pimple is with patches. These tiny, barely-there stickers have become my go-to solution for any last-minute breakouts. Most pimple patches are made with hydrocolloid gel, which effectively heals your skin. Plus, the outside barrier prevents any bacteria from getting in and causing a further infection.

Overrated: Facial Rollers
I can confidently say that facial rollers are, indeed, overrated. Granted, it can feel like a pleasant massage, but it doesn’t do too much for your skin health. If you do see skin improvement such as a more contoured face or improvement in texture, you’ll notice that these conditions will quickly fade after a few hours.
Top Rated Skincare: Gua Sha
If you really want to make a lasting impact, swap your facial roller for a high-quality gua sha. This simple tool dates back all the way to ancient China where it was used as a form of traditional treatment. It’s proven that consistent use of the gua sha can improve circulation and wrinkles, while also promoting lymphatic drainage.

Overrated: Dark Spot Treatment
While the idea of zapping away dark spots from your skin seems ideal, these treatments are rather overrated. Although some of these dark spot treatment products could technically correct uneven skin tone, they are not effective at addressing dark age spots. Personally, I wouldn’t waste my money on these skincare products.
Top Rated Skincare: Vitamin C
If your goal is to brighten and even your complexion, consider infusing a vitamin c-rich product into your routine. This antioxidant is known for reducing the appearance of dark spots by blocking the production of pigments. Additionally, this ingredient can combat harmful ultraviolet rays, leading to improved skin tone and texture.
