It might seem strange that I’m just now writing a post about over the knee boots, but now that the holidays are over and we still have 3 more months of winter to go, I wanted to share some fresh tips for styling thigh high boots. I always find it so interesting how people react to trends – and how trends become staples. Just 10 years ago, this boot style was no where to be found, and today, they come into heavy rotation every fall and winter. It’s so easy to see why – they’re elongating, flattering, and stylish. If you’re looking to replenish your winter wardrobe, thigh high boots are the way to go. Here are a few of my tricks for wearing them……

1. Go monochrome
If you’re worried about over the knee boots looking too provocative, then you can do no wrong with a monochromatic outfit. When you team your thigh high boots with an outfit in similar hues, you create an elongating effect that’s flattering and chic. The colors you can’t go wrong with are obviously neutrals like camel, gray, or black. Add a long coat to create an ultra sleek outfit.

3. Pair it with a mini
One of the ways I have worn over the knee boots throughout my blog is with a mini skirt. If you’re looking for an updated way to wear this combo, it’s all about the silhouette and fabric.

2. Style it with a dress
Black suede thigh high boots look super chic and sexy when styled with heavy knits – such as a sweater dress or a cardigan. I don’t think this outfit combo ever gets old – and it’s a great option when you’re looking for a pant replacement. I also love these boots with the super trendy blazer dress. It looks so modern and reminiscent of that cool, edgy Saint Laurent aesthetic.

A-line minis and wrap skirts paired with thigh high boots sill look relevant today especially when the skirt is constructed of tweed, corduroy, or houndstooth. Top your look off with a plaid blanket scarf or poncho for a classic winter look.

4. Try a contrasting color or print
Sometimes, the best way to make over the knee boots look fresh is by wearing a color that contrasts with your outfit. Brown and gray aren’t two colors you’ll often see people wear together, but it works here since the boots are so vibrant and punchy. Currently, snake skin boots are trending and these Mango ones would be a great way to bring some color and texture into a black or cream outfit. Red or white boots are also a few of my favorite boot colors to wear.

5. Match your boots with oversized silhouettes
If you’re not into the feminine ways to style over the knee boots, try a masculine approach. Wear it with skinny jeans and an oversize blazer. The mix of proportion helps diffuse the risqué look of the boots.

6. Wear it under a midi length piece
Perhaps the most modern and relevant way to style over the knee boots today is with a midi length skirt or dress. It’s the perfect winter ensemble as you can wear a dress and no tights are required. I especially love this look when the boot has a stronger, block heel and slouchy shaft. Stuart Weitzman makes the best ones in my opinion.
