Fall weather is finally happening, meaning it’s time to bundle up in knits, coats, and layers. If you think fashion loses its excitement once freezing temps roll around, enter the statement knit. I love a good chunky knit because they’re so easy to wear – throw them over dresses, denim, or a mini skirt and tights and you’re all set to run out the doors. For the office, they look great with trousers and loafers. Believe it or not, just like textured coats, there are statements knits worth investing in if you pick carefully.

I tend to look for those with unique, eye-catching details like ties, pompoms, or a bold color. To save you some time, I’ve gone ahead and rounded up my favorite statement knits worth investing in.

1 Pom-Pom Details

Pom-poms might just be fall’s coolest knitwear trend. Whether you opt for fuzz balls randomly scattered all over a sweater or dangling off the hems, pom-pom sweaters lighten up any ensemble that takes itself too seriously. Pom-poms can feel a bit like arts and crafts, but they do add a festive touch!

2 Bold

Bold statement knits are definitely worth investing in for fall. I love those with exaggerated cable detailing, a chunky turtleneck, or even something as simple as a bright color or graphic art. They look really chic with leather leggings, vinyl pants, or frayed skinny jeans. Oversized knits woven with multiple colors also create a really bold effect that allows you to wear them alone with minimal accessories and layers. The bold statement knit is the perfect default top to wear on a chilly day.

3 Laced

Interlaced and tied details make it to the list of statement knits worth investing in. Think laces running through metallic grommets or overlapping down the seams of a sweater – and even baring the skin. Lace-up details can reveal quite a bit of skin, so you might need an extra layering piece to stay warm.

4 Fringe

Fringe is so easy to wear on statement sweaters. They add a nice touch of texture, which Is a detail I’m always looking for. I love how they shake and shift back and forth as you walk. You can find fringe on the edges of your favorite knit ponchos and cardigans – or even cascading down the front of your sweater.

Like, pom-poms, they add that fun element that’s perfect for the holiday season. They feel a bit like ornaments decorating a tree.

5 Oversized

Oversized knits are one of my favorite things about fall! I love how they fall all the shoulder so effortlessly and look really casual but still polished with blue jeans and over-the-knee boots. Because of the fit, you can get away with layering camis underneath them for added warmth. I love a cropped oversized sweater as much as I do a longer fit. They’re just so cozy and comfy that I can literally sleep in them.

6 Cutout

If you loved the off-the-shoulder trend of summer, you’ll no doubt love the cut-out detailing of this season’s knits. Your favorite sweaters come spliced at the neck, shoulders, and even on the sleeves, showing the slightest hint of skin in a sexy, but understated way. These knits also lend a deconstructed feel that still looks very feminine because they flaunt everyone’s greatest asset – the shoulders!

7 Ruffled

Ruffles are not going anywhere anytime soon. While we saw them on the hems of dresses and skirts over the summer, they’ve becoming hugely popular in knitwear. If you’re a ruffles fan, now is the time to take advantage of the trend.

Try a sweater with a ruffle detail that wraps around the shoulder or a fitted knit with voluminous, ruffle sleeves. I think you’ll be surprised to find yourself enjoying the twist it brings to your favorite autumn piece. For an additional styling tip, try wearing a ruffle sweater under your favorite summer dress.
