One of the reasons why I love fall so much is that I get to experiment with layering. Although it’s tempting to just throw on a coat and run out the door, there are several ways to create an interesting but chic look through the art of layers. It’s also a great way to reinvent old pieces in your wardrobe. While you can find plenty of “how to layer” articles on the web, I wanted to share some new ways to layer that aren’t often covered. We all know how to throw a turtleneck top under every dress now, but let’s look into more unconventional tips and tricks.

1. Tie a sweater across your chest (or around your shoulder)

October is one of the trickier months to dress for. The mornings and evenings are always unbearably chilly while the afternoons are quite toasty. So, it’s the perfect month to kick off light layers. You can start by tying the sleeves of a sweater together over one shoulder and across your chest. This is a great way to balance out asymmetrical pieces – or to give a classic look a bold twist. You can also add a chunky knit by wrapping the sleeves over your shoulders and tying it at the neck. Although this layering trip isn’t totally brand new, it’s a trick I haven’t seen many utilizing yet.

3. Layer a turtleneck under a button down shirt

To keep yourself warm with an oversized button down shirt, layer a turtleneck knit top underneath. It isn’t too bulky and looks great with jeans or a maxi skirt. You can then build on the layers with a longline coat and a scarf. Basically, you can wear a turtleneck under anything from shirt dresses to dungaree-like jumpsuits and anything else in between.

2. Layer a turtleneck under a wider neck sweater

One of the layering tricks I’m looking forward to using this season is doubling up on sweaters. Nothing looks cozier than layering a turtleneck top underneath a crew or funnel neck sweater. This look also works with deep v-neck sweaters. It’s a great way to mix prints and patterns or play with proportions.

4. Layer a skirt over a dress of the same length

I know sweater dresses are huge during this time of the year, so if you get bored of the same old sweater dress and over the knee boots look, layer a mini skirt over it. I love this look with button down skirts – just remember keep a few buttons undone so the layers become more visible. A-line mini skirts with slits are also another perfect option.

5. Layer a skirt or dress over pants

Finally, layer a skirt or a dress over pants for a change. I find that this look works best if you’re wearing skinny jeans or leather pants. I always start with the jeans an ill-fitting pair can ruin the whole look. I say wear skinny pants because you want it to look sleek – not bulky, bundled, or lumpy. Then, layer a flowy dress over like a wrap dress, asymmetrical silhouette, or a shirt dress. I don’t think this look goes too well with bodycon dresses.
