Here are my top tips to help you nail layering this fall:
1 Go monochromatic
The easiest way to layer this fall is to pick a color and stick to tones in that range. Whether that color is cream, brown, black, or yellow, sticking to one color range streamlines your outfit so you don’t have to worry about looking cumbersome. In this outfit here, my full camel/brown outfit would have allowed me to get away with layering a cardigan or blazer underneath and even adding a fur stole as the final touch.

2 Layer a Sweatshirt Under Your Favorite Dress
As I just mentioned, we all know the turtleneck, poplin top, or t-shirt underneath a dress trick, but why not take it a step further and try a sweatshirt underneath your favorite wrap dress? A sweatshirt is thicker and heavier in weight so you benefit from the extra warmth. It also creates a sportier look that gives you more options for outerwear and shoes. Think sneakers and a puffer or chelsea boots and a trench coat.

3 Let your sleeves come through
One of my favorite tricks to effortless layering is pushing up your jacket sleeves to let the bottom layers peek out from beneath. The best thing about this is you could do it with up to three layers. Try wearing a slinky long sleeve shirt underneath a cardigan and trench coat – or a stripe knit sweater under a poplin blouse and wool coat. In both circumstances, you can pull your sleeves out from beneath the outermost layer. There are various combinations you can try in making this work so make sure to test out a few.

4 Utilize your denim jacket
When you’re out of inspiration, street style is the best way to look for ideas when it comes to layering this fall. Here, we can see that a denim jacket makes for a foolproof layering piece – and it’s something that we all own. You can easily wear it buttoned all the way up with a turtleneck knit underneath it and then throw an oversized coat over your shoulders. Or you can simply wear it unbuttoned with a maxi coat layered on top.

5 Wear a dress as a top
One of the newer way to try layering this fall is wearing a dress as a top. It’s something I saw all my favorite street style stars doing these last few seasons. This type of layering creates really interesting proportions while allowing you to maximize almost everything in your wardrobe – a knit top, dress, denim, and coat. This look works with both maxi and mini dresses.

6 Top it off with a chunky scarf
I love chunky knit scarves with fringe or pom-pom details. Scarves are the perfect way to protect your neck and face from the chilly wind and frigid temperatures. Now would be the perfect time to invest in one for the months to come. There are so many ways to wear a scarf. You can wrap it around your neck, tie it in various ways, or just throw it over your shoulders effortlessly. I love working scarves into my layers.
