Coming from a corporate job, I know how dreadful dressing for the office can be in the winter. The streets are freezing but as soon as you get into the office, temperatures skyrocket and surely enough, you find yourself sweating. Even if you’re in a work environment that’s purely casual, I always encourage putting forth effort into how you look because you never know who you might meet. You should always dress to impress, so I’ll be sharing some tips you can use to make work wear more appealing in the winter.

To reignite your love for getting dressed, you can start by being selective about your main winter pieces, like your shoes, coat, and cold weather accessories. Start taking notes below…

Try statement sleeves

A cotton poplin top will always remain an office staple, but you can always put a twist on it by donning one with a statement sleeve. Pick a pencil skirt or trouser with a flair to go with it. Statement sleeve tops also work great for layering underneath dresses and look super professional with a blazer. There is power in a good sleeve!

Invest in smart outerwear

It’s easy to crave a heavyweight parka or that trendy puffer; however, reserve those for the weekends. It’s obvious that everyone trudges into the office with their coat on in the winter, so you never want to be judged poorly based on your topper. Strive to make yourself chic and memorable by investing in a structured wool option or a luxe herringbone coat. If needed, you can always layer knits, a trench coat, or a light puffer underneath.

Keep it classy

Winter is the perfect time to take tons of inspiration from the past. For instance, look to the 70s! You can always keep your winter work wear classy by adding knee-high boots underneath an a-line midi with a tucked-in turtleneck sweater. For hemlines slightly above the knee, add black tights. It never fails to look amazing with tweed or bouclé textures. Also, experiment with heavier fabrics, snake skin, and belts.

Embrace color

It’s hard to keep away from your usual blacks and camels, but why not freshen up the office vibe with a bright or pastel color? Either hue will combat the chilly temps perfectly and liven up the holiday spirit. Try red trousers or golden sweater. A brighter look correlates to a brighter mood.

Play with volume

Puffy shoulders, ruffle dresses, culottes, and balloon sleeves are all the rage these days – and all add a dash of old-fashion chic to the office, so bring it! Just be sure to keep your waist line cinched and pair it with sleek pumps to create the illusion of a tailored effect. If you’re just looking to introduce volume, try skinny trousers with a full-sleeve blouse or a fitted sweater with wide leg trousers. Volume has a way of making everything look better!

Go for leather

Leather can feel too forward and casual for the office but remember that anything can become more work appropriate when you add a blazer or tweed jacket. If you simply want to add a hint of leather, you can do so with gloves; however, you can also make a statement in leather trousers or a wrap skirt. Look to everyone’s style icon, Emmanuelle Alt, for pulling off leather.
