I think it comes as no surprise if I told you I’m more of an earrings girl than I am a necklace one. However, layered necklaces is the name of the game this season – and it’s become an art that I’ve quickly learned to master. From layers of gold chains to vintage pendants and dainty chokers, anyone can create their own unique layered look. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect asstacks on stacks of necklaces can easily be the cornerstone of a summer outfit given the popularity of low slung necklines. If pulling your favorite jewelry pieces together overwhelms you, follow my tips below on how to layer necklaces.…

1. Start with two necklaces
The best layered necklace looks are those that seem the most effortless. If you’re new to the art of layering, simply start with two necklaces – ideally a 14″ and 16″ strand or 16″ and 20″. The fact that these lengths are slightly closer together makes the layered look seem more natural. While some prefer to stick strictly with dainty chains, I love mixing chunkier ones with thinner ones so each one can stand out.

2. Stick within the same metal tone
Part of the appeal of layered necklaces is how cohesive it looks. Of course there are never hard rules in fashion, but sticking to necklaces in the same metal tone will make your life easier. 3. Add a pendant necklace
Since I prefer to have fun with jewelry, I love wearing pendant necklaces – they’re such a great way to add maximum impact to an outfit. Statement-making gems like vintage gold coins and seashells all deserve a place in the spotlight. If you wear them together, just make sure they come in different length chains. Don’t be afraid to layer multiple coin necklaces together either.

4. Play with a lariat necklace
Lariat necklaces are a great way to finish off a layered look. The elongated style plunges down the neckline and looks super sexy with a button down cardigan or deep V-neck tee. You can let it hang out, or tuck it into your top. From there, add a choker and a medium length necklace to put the finishing touches on it.

5. Stick with pre-layered necklaces
In all honestly, layering jewelry is a craft that times time to get right. If you continue to flail and flounder, just go the easy route and opt for pre-layered necklaces. It’s a short cut that oftentimes looks just as good. BaubleBar, Madewell, and higher end brands like Isabel Marant all come to the rescue and make our lives easier.
