Engagement is all the rage today – so much that it’s become a buzz word. Does it even have meaning anymore? I don’t know for sure, but I know that it’s important to strive for a high level of authenticity and engagement in whatever I share these days. If not, everything just gets lost in the noise. Anyway, I know this is something many of you struggle with and are often asking questions or looking for answers to. 1 Stop consuming captions. Start consuming comments.
I know so many of us are stuck in consumption mode… First thing you do in the morning is look at your phone and either check your email or look at Instagram. (Comment below if you’re guilty – no shame!) And I feel that consuming other influencers’ content usually puts us in a mindset of envy or competitive spirit from a negative source rather than inspiration – both of which I despise. I rarely have time to consume these days, but if you’re stuck in this poor cycle of consumption, my advice would be to stop consuming the captions and experiences.
Instead, dive head first into the comments section. This applies to blog and Facebook posts as well. There is so much to be learned from an audience of consumers. Find out what questions people are asking in your niche. Every time a follower or newcomer asks a question, that’s cue for you to write a valuable blog post or create meaningful content. The best part about answering questions for your niche is that you know your audience is already interested in the topic of your expertise. Learn the vocabulary they’re using and cater your content to them just as you would a resume for a job.

2 Know what the competition is saying and say something different.
We know the advice sector is over saturated. To every Google query of How to X returns hundreds of pages deep filled with answers. So, I challenge you to pay attention to not only what your audience is saying, but also your “competition”. Considering you’re both in the same niche and coming from a place of similar beginnings, you would know whether or not their content has real value.
Note that I’m not discrediting anyone, but if you want to create content that keeps people coming back, you MUST say something different that hits home for others… For example, when I first wrote my tips for fashion week post, I went and read 10 articles on Google first. The overarching theme was about proper etiquette. So, I broke the rules of etiquette – even challenging you to not be afraid to wait, stand in the back, or take an open seat – and many of you found it so helpful! Learn to see and think outside the box and don’t be afraid to push controversial topics, but do so respectfully.

3 Write what you know.
Lastly, stick to what you know and are comfortable with. Too many people claim to be too many things they’re not. While you could get away with this 5 years ago, social media users have become too savvy today – especially in the fashion and beauty sector. At least one person will catch your fluff, front, or dishonesty and hold you to it. When you stick to writing what you know, you remove the chances of error. Start with where you are and draw on your experiences. As cheesy as it sounds, write from the heart because when you’ve gone through something difficult someone is looking for assistance with, you can share insights like no one before you. That’s how you develop trust and loyalty. A perfect example of this is someone selling presets but has no idea how to use a camera or how a premier editing software like Lightroom works – or a micro influencer selling an e-book on how to grow an Instagram following to hundreds of thousands when they only have 15k. The point is, write what you know and where you can prove results.
