Let’s face it, there are two types of people. The people who either enjoy WFH or the people who miss being in person. Personally, I enjoy a healthy balance of both days at home and days out for a change of scenery and some sprinkled socialization. Regardless of your preference, there is a good chance your work life might have transitioned to the confines of your own home. If you find yourself still struggling to stay focused at home, whether you find distractions from your surroundings or just long for the in-office work banter, then this post is for you. Even with two years of WFH under our belt, it is still such a new transitional period and can take a long time to get used to. Keep scrolling to reveal my productivity tips when working from home.…

1) Have a Dedicated Workspace that’s Organized
Mimic the office environment from within your own home by allocating a specific spot to sit down and get busy. By physically forcing yourself to be present, your brain will be more likely to acknowledge this space as the place to do work. On top of that, organization is key!! Remove any clutter from your personal life that could easily cause unnecessary distractions when you are on the clock.

2) Start Your Day Earlier
Although getting up much earlier might have been something we would begrudgingly do in the past to accommodate potential commuting, I highly recommend you get on a schedule where you still wake up with plenty of time to spare. If you made it a habit to roll out of bed and sign on to work, your mind might still be foggy with sleep. In this state, it is much easier to fall to distractions. Instead, try setting your alarm an hour (or more) before you get to work so you have an appropriate amount of time to wake up, get ready, and eat breakfast. It will also allow you to mentally prepare yourself for the busy day ahead.

No matter where you are working from, I will always recommend an old fashioned to-do list (or use an app for those who are tech-savvy). Depending on your habitual behavior, you can either write up a to-do list the night before or the morning of. This will help you to prioritize what you need to accomplish and prioritize for the day. I would even go so far as to make two lists – one for work and one for personal use. That way you can easily tackle answering all your work emails, as well as that extra load of laundry.

4) Dress the Part!
Of course, I cannot stress this one enough! I am not saying you need to change into a business casual outfit every morning before you head to your home office. Merely suggesting that anything other than your pajamas will also help you to switch mental gears into work mode. If a blazer is the missing piece to help you feel more productive, then by all means, you rock that blazer! However, even a cozy sweater and some baggy denim or a set of a knitted top and bottom.

5) Play Music that Gets You into the Groove
If you are the social butterfly type who misses chatting with co-workers in person, the silence from WFH might be deafening. Instead, throw on a playlist of music that gets you hype and in the zone to cross off everything on your to-do list. If music tends to distract you, switch to instrumentals so it is purely just music with no lyrical interjections that might tempt your wandering mind.

6) Take Breaks when Necessary
It is totally possible to overwork yourself too. Trust me, there have been times where I get burnt out. Even at the office, you tend to take breaks via walks to the bathroom or traveling from one meeting room to another or even going to the cafeteria. Be sure to implement breaks into your schedule but keep them relatively succinct so you do not get too distracted with your chores around the house. If you need a change of pace and work allows it, work at a local cafe for a few hours!
