There is a certain show taking the world by storm as of late, which I’ve been obsessed with… “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is an Amazon Prime series that takes place in New York during the 1950’s. Miriam “Midge” Maisel is a housewife who discovers she has a hidden talent for stand up comedy. As the story unfolds, you’ll definitely get hooked on how she navigates life with her newfound skill. However, as I watched, I couldn’t help but be infatuated by the fashion sense and styling that’s presented throughout the show. If you love vintage fashion or find yourself inspired by all the retro trends cropping up, I pulled some of my favorite themes and pieces to recreate the old-time flair of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel outfits in a much more modern way.…

Colored Duster
Midge showcases several drool-worthy pieces, but I couldn’t help but swoon over all the different colored coats she wore. In Midge’s closet, you’ll find pinks, seafoams, reds, and varying shades of blue. I could honestly see myself wearing all of the different coats in real life.

Everyday Pleats
Women’s fashion in the 50’s was all about the mid-length skirt. In one episode, Midge is out and about in New York and wore a long green coat draped over a soft blue blouse and pleated skirt. Of course, she paired the look with perfectly coiffed hair and the eponymous kitten heels.
Although mid-length skirts are more modest, with a contemporary twist they can look completely reinvented. Above are three different spins I put on the vintage pleated skirt. The change of a jacket, swap of a handbag, or addition of sunglasses puts a fresh twist on a 50’s inspired look.

Monochrome
The costume designer of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” definitely played up the monochrome trend that was present in this time period. Midge and some other female characters were fond of wearing a single hue for an overall tonal look. The key to translating this monochrome trend into a modern day outfit, is to ensure the different shades are separated with the use of different textures – or play up the silhouettes. For instance, wear a loose knit top in a light shade of green with a pair of velvet trousers in a deeper emerald.

Polka Dot Accents
There was one scene in particular where I caught Midge wearing a polka dot neck scarf – and it immediately reminded me of why polka dots should remain a wardrobe staple. I’m sure by now that all of you own something with polka dots. Bring it into your everyday outfits whether you’re wearing jeans with kitten heels and a polka dot blouse – or these polka dot espadrilles with a linen dress. They’re so fun and chic.
Bow Tie Pieces
No woman of the 50’s gets around without prim and proper bows. I love how it adds that feminine, ladylike touch. If you don’t own any pieces bow tie details, such as a pussy-bow blouse, try a knotted handkerchief over your top or tie a thin scarf into a bow.

Gloves
Midge always looks stunning whenever she’s going out. In this particular look, I was drawn to an all black outfit she wore. Decked in a gorgeous silk swing dress, she really let her accessories take the stage. She adorned herself with a string of pearls and long opera length gloves that reached all the way to her elbows. Inspired by her LBD, I wore the look above for NYE. This was in a similar fit-and-flare silhouette that is flattering on every body type. In order to give it that Midge touch, I wore my own pair of elbow-length gloves that added that old Hollywood glam aesthetic.
